Profile evaluation: Spanish Civil Engineer

by michnauta » Thu Mar 06, 2014 3:34 am
Hello,

I would appreciate if someone could evaluate my profile. Thanks in advance!

Profile:
Spanish, age 31.
Civil Engineer from University of La Coruña.

GPA=8.5/10 (1st of my class and 2nd best in the country among civil engineering students)
1 academic year in the University of Wales Swansea (UK) under the Erasmus program
Master in Renewable Energy from the EOI (School of Industrial Organization, Madrid), sponsored by my company.

GMAT 730 (Q49, V41, AWA5.0, IR6). 1st attempt.

Work experience:

7 years in a middle-sized Spanish energy company:

2 years as designer and later on as site manager of the construction of a hydropower station in Spain
2 years as project manager of several PV Plants in continental Greece and involved in business development in Spain (starting projects in the renewable energy sector based on technologies in which my company had no previous experience: biomass and energy efficiency projects).
During this stage, I was also responsible for the technical assessment of international renewable energy projects (acquisitions) and the preparation of bids (both national and international).
3 years as project manager developing the most important project of my firm at this moment: 8 wind farms in Spain.

Major achievements:

-Start of my career: Managed the construction of a hydropower station, meeting the deadline and within budget (7.5 M€). Led a team of more than 8 people (> 60 people and several companies were involved in the construction).
-In the middle of my career: I managed the disinvestment of my company in Greece (story of a failure...)
-Most recently: I led the preparation of the bid package for one of the most important tendering processes of wind power in Spain, which resulted in 231 MW of power (250 M€) awarded to my company, competing with and beating big players in the sector. I am currently developing all those projects.

Extracurricular activities:
Captain of the handball team at highschool; semi-professional player until I was 25 years old.
Competed in several regattas at national level (my family had a professional sailing team) and, in tandem, in some international ones (though as amateur).
Active member of the Spanish Chamber of Civil Engineers. Recently elected as member of the regional board.

Goal:

Get to private equity in the renewable energy domain. I am particularly attracted to green investment management.

This is just a summary. Based on the above, would you be so kind to suggest which schools you think I should apply to?
Haas, Fuqua, MIT , Ross and McCombs appeal to me...I would like to go to the USA
Though, given my age, should I start looking for programs in Europe?

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks so much for sending your profile. Your background in engineering with a specific focus on renewables would certainly be of interest to the world MBA community; and you make a great case for what you want to do, and where. Your strong academic and testing profile really make you very viable for strong schools both in the US and abroad. While I understand your concern about your age, and if you should extend your search internationally, I think that you may want to consider both schools in the US and in Europe.

My colleague Judith, former director of admissions at Wharton, tells me that your profile would have been considered as unusual, in a good way- and you have demonstrated that you know what you need to do for the next steps of your career- you're very thoughtful about it.

It would be great to chat with you about your interests, and find out if working with Fortuna Admissions would be a fit for you. We think so!

With best regards,

Thank you for your comments Melissa!

I will take your piece of advice and research a little bit more on European programs, though I think that US programs would match better with what I am looking for. The only program that I have seriously considered in Europe so far is INSEAD MBA. As you may notice, it is a one-year program and not so oriented to "green" technologies. That makes me wonder whether I would find enough time for a transition and similar opportunities in the "green" field.

Perhaps, since you know the program well, you could correct me if you think that I am wrong and shed some light on this issue. I would apprecitate it!

I will consider Fortuna Admissions if I think that I need help later on in the application process and it would be a pleasure to chat with you to discuss my interests before that.

Thank you again

Hey there dude,
Thanks for dropping by.

So first of all, a big congratulations to you on that awesome GMAT score, and on your first try to boot! Well done, sir. Your profile looks preeeetty good. You have some real progression in the energy industry, with great grades and some experience abroad. I like your school list too. Haas and McCombs make total sense thanks to their energy programs/focuses, the other schools also for their various reasons. It's true that at 31 you are a bit on the older side for US programs, but you are also not sooooooo old that they are necessarily out of range. In Europe, I think both INSEAD and IMD would be great choices for you. Many european schools (especially continental ones) have a strong focus on general management in industry, and although INSEAD doesn't necessarily focus on green energy specifically, it should still offer you some good opportunities in your industry.

Overall things look pretty good,
Well done on that GMAT once again!

Best,
JF

I agree with Jon - INSEAD does focus on general management though there are a lot of
- courses related to green initiatives, plus INSEAD has a Social Innovation Centre - take a look at this link here for some course offerings: https://www.insead.edu/facultyresearch/c ... 112012.pdf

- student clubs such as INDEVOR
- post MBA opportunities. For the employment stats brochure you can request one here: https://mba.insead.edu/form/employment_statistics.cfm

Hope that helps,
