A recent article reports that many professors had elected early retirement rather than deal with the new rules in place at Hambleton College.

A. had elected early retirement rather than deal
B. had elected early retirement instead of dealing
C. have elected retiring early rather than dealing
D. have elected to retire early rather than dealing
E. have elected to retire early rather than deal

what is the difference between c and E
when to use participle when to use infinitive,does gmat has clear rule

i always confused when to use what

can somebody explain in details

The answer is C. This is testing verb tense and parallelism. E is wrong because the first part of the answer choice uses the infinitive "to retire" and the second term does not have the infinitive form of deal (to deal). In this context the "to" can't be omitted. In order for E to have been correct, the answer would have had to read "have elected to retire early rather than to deal. Hope this helps.

idiom is "elect to do"

the second verb need not "to" while keeping paralel

E is correct
