I FIND THIS MGMAT QN ODD ! PLEASE EXPLAIN

by mirantdon » Thu Jun 23, 2011 6:59 am
For the last five years, the XYZ Courier Company has made regular delivery trips between Town A and Town B. The average time taken by the company's drivers to drive the round trip between the two towns, excluding the time taken for loading, unloading, and delivery, over that period has been 80 minutes. John, a driver for XYZ, needs to make a personal trip between the two towns; he figures that he should allow approximately 80 minutes for the round trip.

Which of the following, if true, does not call John's conclusion into question?

The route between Town A and Town B has been plagued by increasing congestion over the last five years, as the area's population has doubled during that time.

Most of XYZ's courier vehicles are heavy trucks, for which speed limits are lower than for passenger vehicles.

Many of the packages carried by XYZ between Town A and Town B are large, high-security packages, for which the processes of loading, unloading, and delivery can take up to half the length of the trip itself.

John will make his personal trip at an hour when XYZ does not make delivery trips.

Before a freeway was built between Town A and Town B two years ago, the only routes between the two towns were state highways with multiple traffic lights and reduced-speed downtown zones.

IMO:C

John has asked for 80 mins time based on XYZ's av. time of delivery.

(av. time excludes - delivery time, loading and uploading.)

C talks about delivery time, loading and uploading time. John doesn't need to consider that time as it might possible that in his personal trip he is not delivering any personal stuff.

"Does not call X into Question? " - Does that mean - Find the option that does not challenge John's Conclusion ?

Is that the way we can interpret the Question asked ?

Can anyone pls suggest?

Based on that interpretation my answer would be C

Thanks

The correct way to approach this question is as an "Exception" question.

Read this question stem to say "Each of the following, if true, weakens John's conclusion EXCEPT"

So this is process of elimination - we want to eliminate the four choices that do weaken the argument. The correct answer will be the one that does not.

OA is C.

I found another posting with the official answer listed as C.

The reason that this answer works is that we are looking for the choice that does NOT weaken. Choice C is basically irrelevant to the conclusion so it does not weaken.

SunnyJohn has said it best in one of the posts above!

Interesting point is that this question was listed as 700 plus in the other posting. So hard to tell if an unofficial question would really be in the top 10% of questions. Possibly, it is a little different with that question stem!
