a) 10
b) 15
c) 20
d) 25
e) 30
To divide evenly means to
give everyone the same number.
We can plug in the answers, which represent the number of shells that Dan starts with.
Answer choice C: 20
Since Dan has 5 times as many as Paul, Paul = 20/5 = 4.
Since Dan has 8 more than Andrew, Andrew = 20-8 = 12.
The number split evenly between Paul and Andrew = .4(20) = 8, implying that Paul and Andrew each receive 4 shells.
New Paul = 4+4 = 8.
New Andrew = 12+4 = 16.
Success! Andrew has twice as many as Paul.
The correct answer is
C.
