Princeton review CAT1 DS

by kaf » Thu Mar 19, 2009 2:25 am
Can someone please explain to me why the answer to this DS problem is D although i think is E

If tower A is less than 100 feet tall, is tower B taller than tower A?

(1)Tower B is 3 times as tall as tower A.
(2)Tower A is 30 feet shorter than tower B.

Because

Steam of the question implies that the height of tower A is anything between 1 and 99 therefore

ST1 Tower B can be 3(10) = 30 as well as 3(50) = 150 hence INSUFFICIENT

ST2 Tower A = Tower B - 30 we still do not know the height of Tower A
INSUFFIENT

both statements taken together will still be insuffient because ST1 has more than one value.

Thus i think the correct answer should be E

I would like to know if anyone has anything contrary or point out my mistake to me please

note we dont want the actual values of the heights of the towers, all we want is "is tower B taller than tower A"

1) B=3A
=>B/A=3
=>B/A>1
=>B>A sufficient

2) A=B-30
=>B-A=30
=>B-A>0
=B>A sufficient

hence D

read what is being asked carefully. "is tower B taller than tower A?"
notice it doesn't say "how much taller" or "how tall". this is a 'yes' or 'no' question. ur not looking for numbers
