What fraction of this years graduating students at a certain college are males?

(1)Of this year's graduating students , 33% of the males and 20% of the females transferred from another college.

(2)Of this year's graduating students , 25 percent transferred from another college.

Can somebody pls explain the concept of the transferred students??

let nos of male students = M, female =F

so total = M + F

stmt 1: 33% of M i.e M/3 & 20% of F i.e F/5 are transferred students form this data we cannot infer anything about total nos of male students or female students or what fraction of the students are transferred i.e we cannot relate this with total M+F
INSUFF

stmt 2: it says that (M+F)/4 = transferred students, but we cannot find the nos of Male & Female students tranferred INSUFF

combine we have

M/3 +f/5 = (M+f)/4

M/3+m/4 = f/4-f/5

7m/12 = f/20

m/f =3/35

so frcation of males =3/38

Answer should be C

m=

The answer C is correct, but the calulations further ahead have gone a bit haywire... aneways...GMAT does not count it...

(M/3) + (F/5) = (M+F)/4

(M/3) - (M/4) = (F/4) - (F/5)

M/12 = F/20

M/F = 3/5

therefore M/(M+F) = 3/8.

the answer will still remain C :)
