If today is Carol's birthday, how old is
Carol?
(1) 6 years ago she was half her
present age.
(2) 3 years from now she will be 3
times as old as she was 7 years
ago.

take present age as x.

considering option 1:
age of carol 6 year`s ago = x-6
half her present age = x/2
so, x/2 = x-6 -> x = 12
can be answered with A alone

considering option 2:
age of carol 3 years from now = x + 3
age of carol 7 years ago = x -7
from the statement, x+3 = 3*(x-7) -> x =12
so it can be answered with B alone

hence, it is D

Note following connotations -
Let,
Carol's age today = C
Age 6 yrs ago = C-6
Age 3 yrs hence = C+3
Age 7 yrs ago = C-7

Condition (1) says
C-6=C/2
=> C=12 yrs
SUFFICIENT

Condition (2) says
C+3 = 3(C-7)
i.e 2C = 24
=> C=12 yrs
SUFFICIENT

As both the conditions give us a unique answer, ans=(D)

Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. Aside: As you can see from the earlier posts, it's useful to set up age questions by finding a variable expression for each of the time periods given in the question.
