Question Regarding Community Service

by AmiParik82 » Fri Oct 16, 2009 12:26 pm
Hello

I have a very specific question related to community service. I quit my job 6 months back and since then have been volunteering work in a private hospital (Not a non-profit organization) in Mumbai, India. I decided to volunteer work in a private hospital because i wanted to help people and contribute to my community and at the same time gain some experience in administrative work. I have a 3 years of experience in Information Technology (IT) field and I am interested in perusing MBA in IT or IT related MBA's.

My question to you are:

1> will my volunteer work in private hospital considered community service by admission committee?

2> Can I put my volunteer work experience in my resume while applying to MBA programs?

2> As I took a break from work to do volunteer work will that be taken negatively by the admission committee?

I look forward to receiving your reply.

Thanks in advance.

Best Regards,
Ami

Hello and thanks for your very interesting question --I must say that in a number of years of admissions consulting that this is the first time I have ever heard it.
1> will my volunteer work in private hospital considered community service by admission committee?

2> Can I put my volunteer work experience in my resume while applying to MBA programs?

I am grouping these questions because I think they are, for all intents and purposes, the same question. I can't answer this question without a bit more information but I can help you ask the right question. The right question to me is, "Did I do this as a charitable activity or did I do this to advance my business career?" In other words, "Did I do an unpaid internship or did I do a volunteer project for a for-profit institution to help that institution serve some under-served segment of the population more efficiently and effectively?"
2> As I took a break from work to do volunteer work will that be taken negatively by the admission committee?
No, I don't think so. You'll just need to make the case that your volunteer experience was a compelling one and that you had a compelling reason to do it. If you can clear those hurdles then you should be fine.
Keep me in the loop about your thinking and let me know if you have any more questions.
