Hi,

I'm getting ready to apply for fall of 2013 and have a couple quick questions. First, several schools I'm interested in have Sept/Oct, Nov, Jan, and March deadlines. Are my chances for getting in better the earlier I apply?

Second, my background is in liberal arts (English literature) and I work for the federal government doing non-business work (writing). I'm interested in totally changing careers, maybe to brand management, marketing, international business, and/or something to do with consumer goods. When I apply, should I try to explain my previous work in terms of how it will help me in my hopeful new career, or how should I handle this?

Hey there,
So to your first question: Yes. The earlier the better your chances. So aim for September, where possible.
As for your second, of course some of your work will be relevant. From teamwork skills, to project management to leadership, training, negotiating and so on and so forth. In the measure of what is possible yes, you should connect your past work experience to your goals, but you CAN present a change in your industry, which totally normal for Bschool. But better to look at the specifics of what your goals are and how you can link your past to your future,

Seconding PrecisionEssay - you'll be glad to know that many people that apply and get into MBA programs sort of share your story; they have no business backgrounds and wish to change careers. Make sure to focus on your transferable skills and have a credible story of how what you've done so far has helped you in get to where you are now and how you feel you will progress thereafter.

Also, my advice is not to get too bogged down with trying to apply early. You should be more concerned about having a strong application rather than an early application, but don't leave everything for the very last round either.

Thanks! That is good to know. I was afraid most people come from business backgrounds and it would seem strange that I'm applying. Thanks again.
