profile evaluation

by umr » Wed Mar 02, 2011 12:37 pm
Hi Stacy,

I'm 27/m and have a CA/CPA ,700 GMAT score. Will I have a shot at a first tier MBA school? What about Canadian schools (Rotman, Schulich)?

Thanks for your help!

Dear umr,

Based on the limited information in your post, you have a competitive GMAT score for most MBA programs and evidence of leadership potential. However, you did not indicate what your professional experience has been since college nor your career goals post-MBA, so it is hard to comment fully on your chances at any program. Assuming you have gained quality professional experience since college and will have a strong set of essays and recommendations, I do think you have a shot at Rotman and Schulich, as well as some other top MBA programs. The ultimate decision at any program will be based on a holistic evaluation of your application, so use every component to make a compelling case for your admission. While your GPA is a potential weakness, your solid GMAT and a successful professional track record can mitigate that component.

Good luck,
Lisa

It sounds like you have gained some strong professional experience in the past 3 years. You have built a comprehensive skill set with a breadth of duties and have some leadership and team experiences to write about in your essays. If you feel you are ready to go to business school in 2012, then you should apply in late 2011. Gaining more quantity is not going to strengthen your application, but if you have an opportunity to take on a new significant project or position, then that might be worth delaying your application. The best way to mitigate a low GPA is a high GMAT and quality professional experience. An alternative transcript can also be helpful if you did poorly in quantitative courses in college. In terms of identifying schools, I encourage you to read our sticky on school selection.

Good luck,
Lisa
