opinion for older candidates

by urefriendforever » Fri Apr 06, 2012 12:07 am
Hi all,

I am 31 years old, and want to do my MBA in International Business management. Post MBA i would like to pursue a career in business strategy inovlved in business development + vendor development/sourcing for global businesses.

My credentials are
GMAT : 2008 year 710 score (Plan to retake this year)
Work exp : approx 10 years - working as a project manager in product development for a major automotive firm - dealing in outsourced projects to vendors (hence i would like to extend this into a more strategic & business management role and not just be limited to managing operational techincal product development)

I would like to do a 1 year MBA - hence i need to know a list of schools i can look at. For now i am aware of INSEAD & HEC as a couple of options (although not sure if with my age bracket i will be a welcome addition or not).

A request to this forum from my side, would be to suggest some good B schools & also potential career/job titles i can explore viz-a-viz my aim.

Many Thanks,
NK

Well, first of all, at 31, you are still also young enough that a regular 2 year MBA is an option for you, if this is something you are open to. Otherwise for 1 year MBAs look mostly to European programs - HEC and INSEAD are good places to start. LBS can be as short as 15 months. Oxford, Cambridge, IE, IESE also.
In the US you have most famously Kellogg and Cornell which offer one-year programs.

This should be a good start!

Thank you for your reply..I have a couple more questions

1) how specific one should be in apps..for my case reasons for MBA are..intended to do functional role change..currently more skewed towards project management in product development...want to transition into business administration areas and not limit myself to product development...also I'm interested in strategic management and business development( roles where I get to see product strategies for future, identify growth opportunities in newer markets and product portfolios, identify sourcing or mergers channel partners)..I would prefer this in high tech space. My current role allows me cross functional leadership, opportunities and I have had a chance to meet people who I consider have taken this next step...which really generated interest for MBA in me.

2) considering my interests which b schools would be good? I'm looking at a one year option only.

Thanks again.

1) Be VERY specific. Tell them about this specific role change, and even give them the name of a SPECIFIC position you are aiming at. However, try to avoid the "And I'm also interested in..." because that will make it seem like you either don't know or are unsure.

2. Which schools? Good question - The best things are 1. schools which can help you reach your goals (in this case most any) 2. Schools which you fit (you need to figure out this one yourself, although we can advise) and 3. schools with strengths in your proposed industry. So if it's Tech: Stanford, Haas, Anderson, Tepper, McCombs, Sloan, to start. (Although that doesn't mean a school like Tuck or Kellogg which is not necessarily "tech heavy" can't be awesome!)

Hopefully that should get you started!
