Although there has been great scientific debate for decades over global warming, most scientists now agree that human activity is causing the Earth’s temperature to rise. Though predictions vary, many global warming experts believe that average global temperatures will rise between three and eight degrees Fahrenheit during the next century. Such an increase would cause an alarming rise in sea levels, displacing millions of people by destroying major population centers along the world’s coastlines.

Which of the following is an assumption in support of the argument’s conclusion?

New technological developments in the next century will not divert rising seas from the world’s coastal cities.

Individuals will not become more aware of the steps they can take to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases.

Rising sea levels similarly affect all coastal population centers.

Some global warming experts predict a greater than eight degree Fahrenheit increase in global temperatures during the next century.

Human activity is the sole cause of increasing global temperatures.

IMO - B

Really confused why the OA is - A as B seems makes more sense.

Human activity=>global warming=>rising sea levels=>displacement of people

A. correct. if new tech developments divert seas from coastlines-sea levels do not rise-people do not get displaced

B. negate- if humans were able to control greenhouse emission, temp could still rise-people could be displaced. there could be other human actvities which impact global warming more. argument doesnt fall apart

C. even if rising sea levels did not affect all coastlines equally, millions of people would still be displaced

D. doesnt affect, the stimulus allows for the fact that predictions vary

E. doesnt affect the conclusion

A for me as well coz argument says that human activity is causing the rise in temperature. So what we can assume that would support the conclusion that is human activity is responsible. we can assume that no part of human activity is responsible to decrease in the temperature or to decrease the water level at the coastal regions.
Hence A..

C. Rising sea levels similarly affect all coastal population centers.

D. Some global warming experts predict a greater than eight degree Fahrenheit increase in global temperatures during the next century.
E. Human activity is the sole cause of increasing global temperatures.
My answer: A

Situation:
1. Experts expect temperatures to rise between 3 and 8 degrees F in next century.
2. Such an increase will displace millions in coastal areas.

A: keep
B: keep
C: not relevant. population displacement need not be uniform across all coastal areas. we are concerned only with the sum total displaced.
D: irrelevant. the conclusion (2) was based on the premise of 3-8 degree rise (1)
E: Irrelevant. doesn't matter what the cause is.

B challenges the premise (1) while A modifies the conclusion (2), so go with A.
(Here, I'm taking the premise on good faith. For example, they may have factored in growing awareness to their simulations).
