Rain Umbrella Corp.

by galaxian » Mon Jun 20, 2011 4:10 am
Singing in the Rain Umbrella Corp. plans to institute a marketing campaign in
which it sells umbrellas at the exits of subway stations during rainy weather. The
umbrellas will be sold at a price that is slightly higher than normal. The company
thinks the sales of these higher - priced umbrellas will be greater than normal
sales of umbrellas, because the purchasers of these umbrellas will be forced to
buy them if they do not want to get wet.

The author assumes which of the following about the purchasers of the umbrellas
in predicting the sales of the umbrellas?

A. Customers who do not feel immediate pressure to purchase will
not do so.
B. Normally priced umbrellas are not profitable for singing in the
Rain Umbrellas Corp.
C. Very few people buy Singing in the Rain's normally priced
umbrellas.
D. Singing in the Rain Umbrellas Corp. will have to stop selling
normally priced umbrellas when it starts selling higher priced
umbrellas.
E. Most potential customers of Singing in the Rain's higher priced
umbrellas will not have acquired an umbrella previously.
OA : A
How do we Negate the assumption here in order to get to the OA.
hi galaxian

negation of A

customer who feel immediate pressure to purchase will do so.

hence the sales will increase

so this will be the assumption of the author.

Hi,
The negation of A is : 'Customers who feel immediate pressure to purchase will not do so(purchase)'.
(or)
'Customers who do not feel immediate pressure to purchase will do so(purchase)'.
Cheers!

Though I initially choosed "E" as answer, but later analyzing it througholy. I believe that A must be the answer.

first of all: its CE based assumption.

'Consumer will be forced to buy umbrella (if they dont want to get wet)' --> Sale will higher than normal sale.

Why E is not answer?
Most(51%) customer will not be carrying umbrella.

Lets negate this. Most customer(70%) are carrying umbrella.
Lets say only 30% of potential are not carrying umbrella.
30% can still be higher than normal sale if we assume that normal sale is less than 30%.

Why A is the answer?
Its simple - "No Cause" --> "No Effect".
