PARALLELISM - EINSTEIN

by nandy1984 » Tue Oct 18, 2011 9:36 am
After moving to Switzerland in the 1890's, Albert Einstein attended the Swiss Federal Polytechnic School in Zurich, receiving in-depth training in quantitative analysis and developing a foundation for his future work in mathematical physics.
a) attended the Swiss Federal Polytechnic School in Zurich, receiving in-depth training in quantitative analysis and developing
b) attended the Swiss Federal Polytechnic School in Zurich, receiving in-depth training in quantitative analysis and developed
c) attended the Swiss Federal Polytechnic School in Zurich, received in-depth training in quantitative analysis, and he developed
d) attended the Swiss Federal Polytechnic School in Zurich, received in-depth training in quantitative analysis, developing
e) attending the Swiss Federal Polytechnic School in Zurich, receiving in-depth training in quantitative analysis, and developing

In my first glance I did not find any correct answer....
a) attended......receiving......developing.......NOT PARALLEL
b) attended......receiving......developed........NOT PARALLEL
c) attended......received........he developed......NOT PARALLEL
d) attended......received........developing......NOT PARALLEL
e) attending.....receving........developing......PARALLEL but doesn't make sense
Later I felt that all the three are actually not parallel, so receiving and developing has to be parallel as he can do this only after he attended the school.

While doing the parallelism we need to find the main and the subordinate things...Subordinate things should be parallel with in themselves..But they should not be appended to the Main while doing the parallelism...Can anyone explain me how we can find the Main and the subordinate parts... I can understand that its purely based on meaning, but in some cases like the above it becomes difficult to say it during reading. Are there any questions which we can ask and come to a decision?..Please do help... Thank you...

IMO A

Here "attended", "receiving" and "developing" need to be parallel which they are in A.

"attended" is in simple past only because it provides more emphasis to Eintein attending the Swiss Fed. Poly. in Zurich.

This is a good example of Superficial Parallelism.

a) attended the Swiss Federal Polytechnic School in Zurich, receiving in-depth training in quantitative analysis and developing
b) attended the Swiss Federal Polytechnic School in Zurich, receiving in-depth training in quantitative analysis and developed - it creates a run-on in a modifier. recieving... is a modifier.
c) attended the Swiss Federal Polytechnic School in Zurich, received in-depth training in quantitative analysis, and he developed - not parallel
d) attended the Swiss Federal Polytechnic School in Zurich, received in-depth training in quantitative analysis, developing - not parallel
e) attending the Swiss Federal Polytechnic School in Zurich, receiving in-depth training in quantitative analysis, and developing - run on

Hi rohan,

i dont think here attended also includes the list of receiving and developing...I feel receiving and developing should be parallel which finally refer to einstein after attending he has done all these....hope i conveyed my understanding...Hope some expert can plugin and explain this....

IMO A

Let's take a look at the meaning of the sentence: Einstein attended the school and at the same time, the attendance helped him to 1) receive in-depth training and 2) develop a foundation

In other words, sentence 1) and 2) are sub-ordinate sentences to the first sentence that states that Einstein attended a school. Therefore, 1) and 2) should be parallel

Additionally, we use -ing form to refer to an action that took place at the same time with another action. In this case, Einstein received the training and developed a foundation while he attended school

IMO A.

receiving and developing are outcomes after attending the school. Only A uses the proper tense one preceding the other and parallel as well.

Getting defeated is just a temporary notion, giving it up is what makes it permanent.

Before looking at the parallel structure we should try to understand the meaning of the sentence.

Here - the intended meaning of the sentence is that Albert Einstein did the two things listed here i.e. quantitative analysis and foundation for his future work in mathematical physics WHILE he was still attending the college.

Therefore we need -ing form here.

Choose option A
