Profile Evaluation

by mahajans » Sun Oct 28, 2012 8:24 am
Dear Experts ,

Please evaluating my profile

Engineering from top engineering colleges in India.
6.5 years of professional experience with a reputed Semiconductor Company. Having complete knowledge of Mobile platforms development.

CGPA 8.1/10

Good Academics throughout my schooling , qualified 2 rounds of Maths Olympiad.

Played a key role in setting up a team which is responsible for a 500 M$ business for the company.
Excellent communication skills and customer relationship building

Also providing technical consultancy to my friend who just started his company in Mobile application development.

Been associated with an International NGO for a year and for 4 years during college.

Gave GMAT twice but sad story in both the cases

GMAT 1 610 ( Q 49, V24 ) , wasn't really prepared for the exam. Took test without much preparation.

Prepared ~4 months was hitting 690 -740 consistently in all the mocks (Kaplan, Manhattan, Knewton ,PREP)

GMAT 2 650 (Q51, V28) (was surprised to see my score)

Pretty good with analyzing data hence inclined towards shifting my career to Finance/Consultancy.

Please suggest .

Thanks

Well, the big question for me here is whether it might not be better for you to wait one more year to apply and retake the GMAT?? I mean you have been testing far far higher in your mock tests, so now you just have to land that score on a REAL test. And if you hit a 690+ this will SIGNIFICANTLY help your chances.

Thanks a lot Jon for the reply , in fact I have been delaying my MBA for quite a while now just because of low scores.
Infact I gave the Indian MBA entrance tests (CAT) for 3 years(2007-209) in a row and was stuck in the range ~95-98 %ile each time :-( the culprit being Verbal each time. I wanted to apply for the best B Schools (IIM's) which required > 99%ile.

Though I have pretty good Communication Skills and I have been representing my company for the last 1.5 years giving Technical Presentations to various customers.

I would really appreciate if you could help me with few schools wherein I can apply and I keep the option of giving GMAT next year :-)

Thanks

Regards

Hmmm, well the thing is that as an Indian candidate with a tech background, you are already starting off at a significant disadvantage... with a 650, coming from a country where candidates are regularly showing up with 750, things are even harder.

The questions that need to be thought out (among others of course :) ) are first: What are your goals? What school admit would you be happy with? Would you prefer to go hold out for a better school later or would you prefer rather to compromise on rankings and go now? Do you have any "Aces up your sleeve"? etc...

If you want to start looking at schools, I'd start with the US NEWS and world Report rankings, and very very roughly, start looking at schools ranked 30 or lower which fit into your goals, preference for coursework and location.

If you have any followup questions, don't hesitate.
