With cloning technology, scientists are approaching what has long been the ultimate goal of modern husbandry: achieving a consistency of quality and production in farm animals as once thought to be limited to manufactured goods.
(A) achieving a consistency of quality and production in farm animals as once thought to be
(B) achieving farm animals with a consistency of quality and production as were once thought of as
(C) achieving in farm animals a consistency of quality and production that was once thought to be
(D) achievement of farm animals whose consistency of quality and production are the same as what were once thought to be
(E) achievement of farm animals at a consistency of quality and production once thought of as

OA is C. What's problem with A

In A, "that.." is refering to farm animals rather than "a consistency...". this is corrected in C

I don't see "that" being used in A so can't understand ur explanation..

Anyways, my two cents

Thought to be is better in comparison with "thought of as" here.. and so that eliminates B and E..

Among A, C and D, we can easily remove D.. "achievement of farm animals..." blah blah.. gives this sentence a totally different meaning..

Between A and C.. C seems better.. and is simple to choose also.. if you just ask urself one question.. i.e. What was once thought to be limited to manufactured goods? Answer is consistency of quality and production.. and this needs to immediately precede "that".. so the construction of C is much better..

I am thinking different here.. "consistency of quality and production needs "to be close to "once thought to be limited to manufactured goods"
coz this is what the sentence is trying to highlight..

(A) has two issues :

"achieving quality in farm animals" is incorrect.
"achieving in farm animals quality" is correct.

"as once thought to be" is the second problem.

A) achieving a consistency of quality and production in farm animals as once thought to be
(C) achieving in farm animals a consistency of quality and production that was once thought to be

In C, that clearly refers to consistency, which is tought to be limited to manufacturing.

IMO "C" is best:

With cloning technology, scientists are approaching what has long been the ultimate goal of modern husbandry: achieving a consistency of quality and production in farm animals as once thought to be limited to manufactured goods.
(A) achieving a consistency of quality and production in farm animals as once thought to be
>>As is used to introduce clause. Here Verb is there "thought" but no subject....

(B) achieving farm animals with a consistency of quality and production as were once thought of as
>>As is used to introduce clause.

(C) achieving in farm animals a consistency of quality and production that was once thought to be
Correct.

(D) achievement of farm animals whose consistency of quality and production are the same as what were once thought to be
>>1. Changes the meaning....we are talking about the process becoming stansardised rather then animals become standardised.
2. As is used to introduce clause.

(E) achievement of farm animals at a consistency of quality and production once thought of as
>>As is used to introduce clause.
