very interesting question

We can drop C/D/E for the 2nd THAT - by putting 2nd THAT we make sound as if CONTEMPORARY ACCOUNTS SHOW 2 THINGS (1) THE FOUNDER...WAS HIMSELF and (2) HE WAS DRIVEN.. (in C/D) or HIS DESIRE (in E). However, the original sentence says just say ONE thing - the part by 2nd THAT is actually prepositional (adverbial) modifier modifying DRIVEN.

btn A and B - B is too wordy (see AS WELL AS; AND ALSO); there is no other element that can made parallel with AND ALSO DRIVEN BY..

IMO A
