by pradeepkaushal9518 » Wed Jul 21, 2010 10:23 am
Proponents of artificial intelligence say they will be able to make computers that can understand English and other human languages, recognize objects, and reason as an expert does-computers that will be used to diagnose equipment breakdowns, deciding whether to authorize a loan, or other purposes such as these.

(A) as an expert does-computers that will be used to diagnose equipment breakdowns, deciding whether to authorize a loan
(B) as an expert does, which may be used for purposes such as diagnosing equipment breakdowns or deciding whether to authorize a loan
(C) like an expert-computers that will be used for such purposes as diagnosing equipment breakdowns or deciding whether to authorize a loan
(D) like an expert, the use of which would be for purposes like the diagnosis of equipment breakdowns or the decision whether or not a loan should be authorized
(E) like an expert, to be used to diagnose equipment breakdowns, deciding whether to authorize a loan or not

I think A is correct

following choices may be wrong

B--- verb, which
C--- like + clause
D---like + clause ( like the diagnosis ..... be authorized )
E ---to be used to diagnose
What you think, you become.

Pradeep,
Whatever your source, the guy likes artificial intelligence.

Answer should be C.

If you check the meaning of expert = A person with special knowledge or ability who performs skillfully

so here the "like an expert" means the quality of expert is compared with qualities like recognize, understand. Hence 'Like' is correct here.

So A & B gone.

(D) like an expert, the use of which would be for purposes like the diagnosis of equipment breakdowns or the decision whether or not a loan should be authorized -->Incorrect: instead of second 'like', it should be "such as"

(E) like an expert, to be used to diagnose equipment breakdowns, deciding whether to authorize a loan or not -->Incorrect: modifier + ing modifier..doesn't make any sense.

(C) like an expert-computers that will be used for such purposes as diagnosing equipment breakdowns or deciding whether to authorize a loan -->Correct: what follows after '- (dash)' is elaborating the previous clause.

Something seems to be wrong with this sentence. However, C is better for whatever sentence is posted. What is the source of this question?
