In 1981 children in the United States spent an average of slightly less than two and a half hours a week doing household chores; by 1997 they had spent nearly six hours a week.

A. chores; by 1997 they had spent nearly six hours a week
B. chores; by 1997 that figure had grown to nearly six hours a week
C. chores, whereas nearly six hours a week were spent in 1997
D. chores, compared with a figure of nearly six hours a week in 1997
E. chores, that figure growing to nearly six hours a week in 1997

IMO B. If it is incorrect, could someone kindly explain the correct answer?

also since in the 4th choice 'compared with' is used.. please also explain the differences between compared with and compared to..:)

IMO D.

A& B are easy to eliminate ..
c->passive
e->not parallel

and as for compared with and compared to ....

The human brain is compared to the computer ---> dissimilar objects are compared.

The original bill was compared with the duplicate ----> similar thing are compared

IMO D.

A and B are easy to eliminate because clause after ';' should be a complete sentence.
When you think you can or you cannot, you are generally correct.

imo b ... although the tense seems wrong. both are in the past. but D does not sound right
can people please post the OA as well since its hard to track a question.

yeah it should be clause (clauses are complete sentence anyways)... and here it is not a clause (complete sentence).
