Are you still reading the other newspaper in town? Did you know that the Daily
Bugle is owned by an out-of-town business syndicate that couldn't care less about
the people of Gotham City? Read the Daily Clarion, the only real voice of the
people of Gotham City!
Which of the following most directly refutes the argument raised in the
advertisement above?
(A) Over half of the advertising revenues of the Daily Clarion come from firms
whose headquarters are located outside of Gotham City.
(B) The Daily Clarion usually devotes more of its pages to out-of-town news than
does the Daily Bugle.
(C) Nearly 40 percent of the readers of the Daily Clarion reside outside the limits
of Gotham City.
(D) The editor-in-chief and all the other members of the editorial staff of the
Daily Bugle have lived and worked in Gotham City for ten years or more.
(E) The Daily Bugle has been published in Gotham City for a longer time than
has the Daily Clarion.

What do you all think the answer should be?

My answer is D. It "directly" negates the argument "owner is non gothamite"

I go with D.

The argument stated that because the owner does not belong to the region, the daily cares little about the city. So if we provide a scenario where the staff belongs to the region, then the argument made by the author would be directly weakened.

The author concludes that owner of Daily Bugle couldnt care less about the ppl of Gotham city and that the Daily Clarion is the only real voice of the ppl of Gotham City.

Any answer choice that states that Daily Bugle cares about ppl of gotham city and it is voice of the ppl of gotham city would weaken the argument. Lets see which one does that for us :

(A) Over half of the advertising revenues of the Daily Clarion come from firms whose headquarters are located outside of Gotham City.
Incorrect : Source of advertising revenue is not an issue here. Eliminated

(B) The Daily Clarion usually devotes more of its pages to out-of-town news than does the Daily Bugle.
Incorrect : This is a strong contender. Lets put this on hold n move ahead.

(C) Nearly 40 percent of the readers of the Daily Clarion reside outside the limits of Gotham City.
Incorrect : Clearly out of scope

(D) The editor-in-chief and all the other members of the editorial staff of the Daily Bugle have lived and worked in Gotham City for ten years or more.
Correct : This one hits at the right spot. It demonstrates that editorial staff n head (those who actually write the news) are all frm Gotham city. Hence they do care about Gotham city and are also the voice of the ppl of gotham city.

(E) The Daily Bugle has been published in Gotham City for a longer time than has the Daily Clarion.
Incorrect : Irrelevant
Hope this helps : )

The explanation , IMO, for the correct answer D should only make the conclusion little less likely - here the conclusion says "only...real voice" by suggesting the owner of beagle is out-of-town. well just showing owner does not only represent the whole newspaper should be enough and others are from Gotham.
IMO, too strong conclusion "only/.." is one of the flaw in the argument.

if they did not say "only" probably they could have been right as there corresponding people may be living there for 15 years including it's owner.

I still feel D should be the answer.
