comparison

by Jatinder » Wed Nov 12, 2008 12:01 am
When the real estate market is uncertain homeowners are more likely to put money into stocks or certificates of deposit than into home improvements.

(A) than into
(B) than they do into
(C) than they are into
(D) as into
(E) as

If B, then why not C and if C, then Why not B
In short, justify the elimination

In short, justify the elimination

1. idiom or even normal readers can identify

More X than Y

X and Y must be parallel

This eliminates D and E

2. B and C use, They which is really not required as its understood due to only one plural subject "Homeowners"

C also changes the meaning as if they make start making home or join home making profession

3. When the real estate market is uncertain homeowners are more likely to put money into stocks or certificates of deposit than into home improvements.

Bold parts are parallel hence A

IMO B

DE can be easily eliminated as we need more... than

more into stocks than into home improvements
is corrrect usage but here we have more before likely to put
hence A is also wrong

than they do into / are into

homeowners are
more
likely to put money into stocks or certificates of deposit
than
they they are into.............

homeowners are into stocks is incorrect
so C is also wrong

we are left with B

One more vote for A

More likely to put money into X than into Y

Only A maintains the parallelism into stocks than into home improvements.

As a request, can you please underline the part to be corrected in the question. It makes life much simpler. Thanks :)

or is a cordinating conjunction.

Cordinating conjunction is used to join two independent clauses.

1st independent clause
When the real estate market is uncertain homeowners are more likely to put money into stocks than into home improvement.

2nd independent clause
When the real estate market is uncertain homeowners are more likely to put money into certificates of deposit than into home improvements.

When 2 independent clauses are joined together we need PARALLELISM.

if you notice, in 2nd independent clause we need a PRONOUN to refer to homeowners.

This eliminates A,D,E.

Choice C "Than they are into" changes the meaning i.e. verb is not parallel.

Choice B. parallelism: They (homeowners) are more likely "to put" (action) money into stocks or certificates of deposit than they(homeowners) "do" (action) into home improvements.

Whats the OA?
No rest for the Wicked....

I'm with Logitech. B doesn't sound right to me. I think it's A.

I will go for A.

Without applying much brain, it's simple, concise and meaningful.

I just rephrase what stop800 meant:
stop@800 wrote: more into stocks than into home improvements

[/quote]

idiom is more X than Y
X= likely to put
Y = are

Hence they are not parallel

Take B
X= likely to put
Y = do

Parallel ...bingo!!
