While many students of foreign languages start out with the best of intentions,
many learners quickly discover that the effort involved in memorizing endless
vocabulary words and doing countless drills are daunting

THE EFFORT ...IS DAUNTING (drop A/B)

D - THE MOMORIZATION ...and DOING (noun and CONJUGATED verb is made parallel); drop

C/E - WITH ...IN or IN...IN (IMO, both involved IN /WITH are correct, but in this sentence IN...IN is more parallel as sentence intends to show participation in both activities).

Bill, do you mean D is correct.

No, I got a little quick on the "submit button" :D Patanjali is correct about why D doesn't work (lack of parallelism)
