the answer to this problem is definitely (a), for the reasons mentioned upthread.
this is a standard present participial (i.e., -ing) modifier, modifying the clause whose verb is "orbited".

in fact, for
modifier errors, "sounds better" is
worse than just irrelevant - it's downright misleading.
modifiers are not spoken in the same ways in which they're written, and vice versa.
they just aren't.
therefore, using sound to decide these things is a sure route to disaster.
