It is well known in the supermarket industry that how items are placed on shelves and the frequency of inventory turnovers can be crucial to profits.
(A) the frequency of inventory turnovers can be
(B) the frequency of inventory turnovers is often
(C) the frequency with which the inventory turns over is often
(D) how frequently is the inventory turned over are often
(E) how frequently the inventory turns over can be

OA: [spoiler](E)[/spoiler]

OG says, "Choice [spoiler](D)[/spoiler] ungrammatically reverses the subject-verb order with is the inventory". But can an inventory turn over by itself? Moreover, "items are placed" is in passive voice. then should not the second part also be in passive voice to maintain parallelism? Can you show some more valid reason to ignore [spoiler](D)[/spoiler]?

The Reason I eliminiated D was as follows -

first clause- how items are placed
In this items(noun) follows how

So to maintain parallelism
in second clause - how should be followed by a noun i.e inventory.

IF you see in D - items are placed in not parallel to "is the inventory turned" Hence eliminate D.

E is not perfect. It should have been "how frrequently the inventory is turned over"

agree with hemantsood on E

inventory turnover is a ratio, it cant have a frequency so A and B are out.

C. is out as we need a how to make it parallel to "how items are placed on shelves"

D. the verb "is" is placed before the subject inventory, this destroys the parallelism as we have the verb "are" after the subject in "items are placed."

E. better. "items are placed" is passive. ok to use active "inventory turns over" as passive "inventory is turned over" sounds awkward as though it is turned over like a page. inventory turns over=> completes a cycle, it makes sense, so we do not need a passive voice for this.

hemant, could you please tell me where you encountered this problem? i posted the OA as given in a pdf for GMAT OG 10th ed. i've not checked OG 11 and verbal review for some time now. is this question there as well?

Thanks, hemant! This same question appears in the Verbal Review also and the OA is indeed [spoiler](E)[/spoiler]. I copied the question from another post in this forum and did not verify the OA. sorry for confusing. i have already made the necessary corrections.

any way, my question was quite clear. i wanted to get some more reasons for eliminating [spoiler](D)[/spoiler] and schumi_gmat and scoobydooby have given some valuable inputs. thanks everybody for participating in the discussion.
