The rule is:-
Unless the actions do not take place at the same time, you should keep all the verb tenses in a given sentence the same.
For example:- She WALKED to school in the morning and RAN home in the afternoon.
The two actions here are at different time in the past, so we should have used the PAST PERFECT for the earlier action.
Is the reason that it has not been used is because the sentence itself describes two different times when the two actions took place, so we don't need the PAST PERFECT to help understand the sequence.
Please tell me whether my understanding is right.
Thanks in advance.
