25. If x ≠ 1, is y equal to x + 1?
(1)
(2) y2 = (x + 1)2

Why is not D?

evaluating just the second statement: Its insufficient, as (-3)^2=3^2 ; However, -3 is not equal to 3. similarly, every negative & positive pair of a number would satisfy this.

y2 = (x + 1)2
=> y=+(x+1) or y=-(x+1)
Hence insufficient
