URGENT: I NEED PROFILE EVALUATION ASAP

by zulu_cuts » Wed Nov 11, 2009 9:11 am
Hi

I want to apply for MBA from USA/Canada for Fall 2010 session.
Here are the points to make my profile:

1. My GMAT score is 670
2. I have a full time work ex of 2 years in an IT industry (Financial Domain)
3. We own a family business with a turn over of Rs50 crores and I work part time for 4 years there as a management trainee during my engineering graduation.
4. I have been a sports person at college level in football and state level in snooker.
5. I worked with a Christian orphanage but have no certificate to prove it.
6. I joined various environment protection activities in my company such as growing tree campaign, save electricity and also volunteered in Blind School visits representing my company.
7. I worked with the MNC in order to know the functionality of these companies to such a large level (Which I think I have learnt successfully) and my long term plan is to start my own venture(food chain) in partnership with my Family in States.
8. I got promoted within a year of joining my company even in this recession period (only 1.7% people got promoted form my company this year)
9. Now with this kind of profile what do you think? Which universities should I apply? I would love to get a scholarship as it will certainly boost my confidence and will also save some money for my future venture.

With only two years of work experience and a GMAT score of 670, you will find it difficult to get into a top 10 and maybe even a top 20 program. Your GMAT is probably within the 80% range of most of the programs however it is not outstanding. In order to compete with applicants for top-tier slots, you will need to differentiate yourself either in terms of skills, experiences, or goals. As you probably know, there are tons of IT focused, Indian applicants so you have to stand out from the crowd. Though your profile is solid, it is not unique. Work on packaging yourself so that you are unique and also look specifically at programs that fit well with your future goals (in terms of concentrations, corporate relationships, school organizations, etc.)

Thanks for such a quick reply.

So can you suggest me on what other things should I do in order to get into top 10 B schools (with scholarship)
I can join my own company full time at a Management post (if that helps).
My dream is to study in HBS.
I can wait for few years in order to gain work ex for top 10 B schools.
Please suggest me what else can I do within next 2 year so that I can get into top 10 B schools in USA specially HBS?
I would love to hear that in detail so that I can follow your advise in the best possible way.

You need to get upwards of 750 GMAT to even think about being considered at HBS. You are very prototypical indian IT. Also, Very unlikely you will get scholarship to HBS....I would aim lower. I think you have a very limited understanding of how competitive it is for HBS and most other top tier school.
