Hobbies VS Extracurriculars

by [email protected] » Thu Apr 18, 2013 6:46 am
Hi Team,

Infinite thanks for your great contribution to this forum. :-D :-D

I have trouble understanding word "Extracurricular Activities" in MBA Application context. It is causing Extra confusion to present in application

1.Are hobbies considered as Extracurricular activities? Like contributing to Wikipedia, Web Designing, Blogging etc?

2.Does occasional business/Tax advising qualify as Extracurricular even if they RELATE to my field of work?

3.Is contributing to NGO/Association only considered as extracurricular? I mean participating in structural organized way Or Voluntary personal acts too?
I mean in Non-NGO activities may not
- be organized, structural, regular
- impact society or have great cause
- give scope to display leadership/team management skills as adcoms may want to see?

[email protected],

Thanks for your post.

Extracurricular activities are generally defined as contributions to any organization that is not your employer. If you do business/tax advising for an organization other than your place of employment then that would be considered an extracurricular activity. And yes, any volunteer activity or leadership role for an NGO would also be considered an extracurricular activity.

Hobbies that you do on your own (e.g., playing piano, blogging) would not generally be considered extracurricular activities. Some schools have a separate section in the application for hobbies. We recommend listing hobbies on your resume in the bottom line generally.

And activities that you do above and beyond your formal role at your place of employment (e.g., recruiting, community service) would go in your work experience section.

Hope that helps!

Best,
Heidi
