If Jim earns x dollars per hour

If Jim earns x dollars per hour, it will take him 4 hours to earn exactly enough money to purchase a particular jacket. If Tom earns y dollars per hour, it will take him exactly 5 hours to earn enough money to purchase the same jacket. How much does the jacket cost?

(1) Tom makes 20% less per hour than Jim does.

(2) x + y = $43.75

1) 0.8x =y

4x=5y

Not sufficient

2) x+y =43.75

We have two equations in 2 variables, solvable... Sufficient

price of jacket = 4x = 5y ==> y=0.8x
St.1 : y = 0.8 x not suff to solve for x and y
St.2: x+y = 43.75 also y=0.8x --> 1.8 x = 43.75 -->x = 24.3055
so price of jacket = 4x24.3055
sufficient

price paid by jim=4x
and that paid by tom=5y

price of jacket paid by jim=price of jack paid by tom
therefore 4x=5y
know thw value of x or y
to find price of jac we need to
s1)x=4y/5
insuff to solve

s2)x+y=43.75
4x-5y=0
two eqn two variables hence suff

solving x=24.3055
