Re-opening thread to understand concept!

by Pdgmat2010 » Sat Aug 21, 2010 11:04 pm
Cartographers have long struggled with the problem of having the spherical Earth to draw on a flat sheet of paper.

(A) having the spherical Earth to draw on a flat sheet of paper
(B) having a flat sheet of paper on which to draw the spherical Earth
(C) how can one draw the spherical Earth on a flat sheet of paper
(D) how they could use a flat sheet of paper to draw the spherical Earth
(E) how to draw the spherical Earth on a flat sheet of paper

Source: ETS papers

is 'they' in option D ambiguous? according to the sentence, 'cartographers' <plural> is the only subject of the sentence.

if the pronoun is not a problem, then is it the prepositional phrase 'on a flat sheet of paper' the reason to choose the OA over D?
Trying to get my head around
D and E and the OA is E
experts, pls help

First of all, E is concise than D.
Also, D wrongfully gives the impression that the problem was confined only to the cartographers.

now that you mention it, i can see it clearly.
how 'they' could do something shows inability on the part of the Cartographers rather than the natue of
the task..

phew.. 15 days left for the test and am getting such answers incorrect!!

I agree E is correct. However, could someone provide the reasoning why C is incorrect ?
