Serious Financial Problems - MBT

People with serious financial problems are so
worried about money that they cannot be happy.
Their misery makes everyone close to them—family,
friends, colleagues—unhappy as well. Only if their
financial problems are solved can they and those
around them be happy.

Which one of the following statements can be
properly inferred from the passage?

(A) Only serious problems make people unhappy.

(B) People who solve their serious financial
problems will be happy.

(C) People who do not have serious financial
problems will be happy.

(D) If people are unhappy, they have serious
financial problems.

(E) If people are happy, they do not have serious
financial problems.

How do you approach this kind of questions?

IMO [spoiler]E:[/spoiler]

A: People can be unhappy because of other reason also
B: Even though people solve their financial problem, they can still be unhappy
C: If people doesn't have serious problem, it doesn't necessarily mean that they are happy.
D: People can be unhappy because of other reasons also
E: If people are happy, it means that definitely they don't have financial problem

The key statement is:

If financial problems are solved are solved then people can be happy.

A) OOS
B) and C) not possible on account of the statement above. There is a possibility that even if financial problems are solved then also people can be unhappy.
D) Not necessarily.

IMO E) If people are happy then they certainly do not have financial problems.

IMO E. Here is my reasoning...


(B) and (C) are OUT - If people's friends or relatives are unhappy the poeple without any serious financial problems will be unhappy.

(D) is OUT - Not necessarily. People's friends or relatives might have serious financial problems that make people (with out financial problems) unhappy.

(A) and (E) are left.

(A) is OUT - The reason is same as mentioned above for ruling out (D).

Before confirming (E) lets examine it.
If people are happy means they
1. do not have serious financial problems and
2. do not have friends or relatives who have financial problems

I could be wrong, correct me if I am.

The answer is E; use the contrapositive.

I would go with E. The explanation is given below.

(A) Only serious problems make people unhappy. – too extreme answer for GMAT, eliminate this answer

(B) People who solve their serious financial problems will be happy – in the statement it is mentioned that people can be happy, not will, eliminate this answer

(C) People who do not have serious financial problems will be happy – people who do not have serious financial problems are out of scope, eliminate this answer

(D) If people are unhappy, they have serious financial problems – if people are unhappy, it doesn’t matter that their have serious financial problems, eliminate this answer

(E) If people are happy, they do not have serious financial problems – RIGHT. There are typical logical structures – if X, then Y and if not Y, then not X.

IMO one of the easiest ways to solve this type of problems is using set theory....

The way I solved is as per the attached image...only "E" remains with the help of the set theory...can some one please tell if the way I have used is not correct or there are any gaps in my understanding.

In the attached picture FP means people with Financial problems

(B) People who solve their serious financial
problems will be happy.: stimulus says that people with financial problems cannot be happy , we are talking about people with serious financial problems ,it states that if you are happy then your FP are solved ,not the other way around

(C) People who do not have serious financial
problems will be happy.: We dont know whether people will be happy if they do not have serious FP's only if they do have FP they are not Happy

(D) If people are unhappy, they have serious
financial problems.: We told that if people have FP then they are not happy , Not this way , we can not infer about unhappiness

(E) If people are happy, they do not have serious
financial problems. : correct
