IMO B

Gmat always prefers rather than over instead of
so we can rule out DE

Australian egg-laying mammals of today are AAA rather than BBB
here AAA and BBB should be parallel

AAA is A branch......
so we need a type
so A is out

out of B and C
B is more clear and concise
it says "developed independently from"
which is the correct usage
