I would choose D.
Since they have moved to higher grounds now , had adapted fits the sentence.
Whats the actual answer ?

IMO A.
Due to the presence of before which specifies the sequence of events a simple past tense will be fine.

Is there any typo in this question????

In all the options, "rats" does not agree to "its" and "it".

Anyways, "had" is needed even though we have "before". Grammatically, we need to make the sequence of actions clear.

Second action= "forced"
First action="had adapted".

Experts, have your say.

Sounds strange.. but i feel all options are wrong here..

by extracting moisture from th humid air using its nasal passages and by collecting seeds from native grasses, giant kangaroo rats adapted well to the desert environment in the San Joaquin valley before the encroachment of irrigated farms forced it to move to higher ground.

All options have Giant Kangaroo rats ....... refered by "Its" in the end of the statement. which i feel is incorrect.
please explain in case you have a alternate opinion

What is the source of the question

i too think there is more than one typo in this question thus making it hard to justify an answer...

like someone previously mentioned "its" does not pair with "rats" correctly...
