Princeton Prep Test SC

Fishermen who make their livings from the Long Island Sound are experiencing serious losses, and their troubles escalated in recent months and pressure on regulators to strengthen health codes for fisheries has intensified.

(A) and their troubles escalated in recent months and pressure on regulators to strengthen
(B) their troubles escalating in recent months as pressure on regulators to strengthen
(C) with their troubles escalating recently as pressure on regulators for strengthening
(D) as their troubles escalated in recent months while pressure on regulators to strengthen
(E) as in recent months, their troubles escalated, due to pressure on regulators for strengthening

-------------------------------------
Would anyone help me explain why it's (B). My first choice was (D)

Hi,
Can u pls double check the question. I see some typos.

Fishermen who make their livings from Long Island...
should be
Fishermen who make their living on Long Island ???

Also is there a ; instead of , after serious losses??

thanks

1) the idiom is 'pressure to' so you can eliminate C and E
2) 'troubles escalated' is passive voice so it B is preferred to D

"make a living from" is a correct idiom. I've checked again. Nothing typed wrong here

D looks the best among all.

A--

Fishermen who make their livings from the Long Island Sound are experiencing serious losses, and their troubles escalated in recent months and pressure on regulators to strengthen health codes for fisheries has intensified.

(A) and their troubles escalated in recent months and pressure on regulators to strengthen ---- Not parallel

(B) their troubles escalating in recent months as pressure on regulators to strengthen ----- comma should have been semicolon

(C) with their troubles escalating recently as pressure on regulators for strengthening ---- wordy and awkword ...for...for...

(D) as their troubles escalated in recent months while pressure on regulators to strengthen

(E) as in recent months, their troubles escalated, due to pressure on regulators for strengthening --- their ...ambiquous ...

as simple as that :)

experiencing and escalated (diff tense) so A ,D and E elliminated

between B and C ...ing form is a ongoing process ... so to... strhengthen is infintive and right option
