Comparison

by ronniecoleman » Sun Dec 21, 2008 5:14 am
Manhattan Says:

Comparison need to structurally parallel.

Does this comparision structurally parallel:

I ran faster than him.

I lift more weights than him

I am shorter than him....... and so on....

I have seen these sentences in manhattan SC, so i presume that these are correct...

But how ?
aren't they violating structurally parallelism...

Appreciate your inputs??

Ronnie,

I am shorter than HE (is) needs to be correct. So I am not sure where you saw those sentences ?

Here is my take on this,

These questions always test the subject and objective pronoun rule considering the first, second and third person rule.

Plural pronouns

Subject - They - 3rd person
Object - Them- 3rd person

Subject - We - 1st person
Object - Us - 1st person

In deciding between their and them possessive pronoun

Their - subjective case
Them - objective case

Similarly, Singular pronouns

Subject - He - 3rd person
Object - him- 3rd person

Subject -I - 1st person
Object - me- 1st person

The second person in both the cases [singular & plural] object and subject remains the same

Hope this helps.

Considering the above post all the below listed sentences are correct

I ran faster than him

I lift more weights than him

I am shorter than him

Here is another example to show the rules.

John and me were playing in the garden - incorrect

Me - is incorrect because it is the subject, we cannot use me when talking about the subject.

John and I were playing in the garden - correct

In the same line of thought we can also say

He and I were playing in the garden.

He - subject - 3rd person
I - subject - 1st person

If you have any examples or doubts, kindly bring them to light. Considering we are already so much confused about a majority of & the majority of, we can at least take this baby to its grave.

Is use of 'him' correct in this sentence
I am shorter than him
This is because any time pronoun comes after one of “to be” verbs, the subject form of the pronoun is needed. If we go by that then it should be
I am shorter than he (is)

According to this link, subject case always comes after than or as

Then every sentence listed above is incorrect. Him should be He

My entire work on grammar is just going down the drain

Sentences from MG edition 3

"you are less interestting than she"
I sleep more than I should
I spend less than I did last year

so, taking these as a reference, sentences above are incorrect

after than or as , we indeed need a subject pronoun

If one can find any OG example to support this, we can just close down
