When Bob's Bistro opened in the town of Montrose last year, the proprietors of Andrew's Eatery, the only other restaurant in town, feared that their business would suffer. Surprisingly though, in the past year the average number of meals per day served at Andrew's Eatery has actually increased significantly.

Which of the following, if true, provides the best explanation for this occurrence?

A] The meals at Andrew's Eatery are substantially lower in price than those offered at Bob's Bistro.

B] Bob's Bistro is closed on Sundays, and so for Sunday brunch residents of Montrose would either go to Andrew's Eatery or venture to a neighboring town.

C] The profit per meal is higher, on average, at Bob's Bistro than it is at Andrew's Eatery.

D] Bob's Bistro attracts a large number of patrons that had never dined in Montrose before, and on many days Bob's Bistro attracts more customers than it can seat.

E] Andrew's Eatery serves considerably more meals on weekends than it does on weekdays, which is not the case at Bob's Bistro.

OA is D. I am still confused between the options D and E.

Let me guess that if option E is true, then Andrew's Eatery should never fear of its business being lost, but the premise says that Andrew's Eatery fears of the loss of business.

Option E reveals that fear element as well as the gain in the business parameter. Now that is the resolve the paradox question....

Wow!!! accept it guyzzzz... there are some questions on the GMAT, especially in the CR section, that are just exceptional and really amaze you to the core.

I did not get the answer but am really impressed with the question... It was a shocker...

Actually, E is incorrect, because even if Andrew's did serve more people on weekends, it doesn't really imply or explain how the "Average number of meals" served by Andrew's increased ? We can't say, 'yes', average number of meals as compared to last year has increased just because they do better business than Bob's on weekends! We aren't concerned about comparing Andrew's and Bob's restaurants. Just with resolving the paradox.

E] Andrew's Eatery serves considerably more meals on weekends than it does on weekdays, which is not the case at Bob's Bistro. -- doesn't give us a direct reason.

Whereas, D is correct primarily because it implies that over and above the 'n' number of people who lived in Montrose and ate at the restaurants, there were more people who came and who couldn't find a place at Bob's. Since Andrew's was the only other restaurant, the extra folks had to eat someplace and they went to Andrews. Hence, the increase.
