(1) If a = -2 and b = 1, then a.|b| = (-2).|1| = -2 and a - b = (-2) - 1 = -3; here a · |b| > a - b
If a = -2 and b = -1, then a.|b| = (-2).|-1| = -2 and a - b = (-2) + 1 = -1; here a · |b| < a - b
No unique answer.
So, (1) is NOT SUFFICIENT.

Pradeep, can you please check the 2nd statement? Some inequality sign seems to be missing.
