Zoologists warn of an imminent surge in the number of bird species that will become extinct within this century. Nevertheless, these zoologists are wrong. One need only consider the information gathered on native North American raptors, such as bald eagles and peregrine falcons. Several of these species came close to vanishing between 1900 and 1970, but since 1970, the local populations of these raptors have rebounded.

The answer to which of the following questions provides information that would be most helpful in evaluating the argument above?

A] How many species of non-native raptors have been introduced into North America since 1970?

B] What special efforts, if any, have been made to rescue native North American raptors since 1970?

C] How many years' experience do the zoologists have in evaluating patterns of extinction among animals?

D] To what degree have native North American raptors migrated to other parts of the world?

E] How many acres of woodland are set aside each year as bird refuges?

The given OA is B.

The conclusion is that not all the bird species have experienced a surge in their numbers.

I really could not solve this question. It seems really very very difficult. Guyzzzz please help.. Experts please help.

I am not expert, but I would like to give my 2 cents to it.
You have not interpreted the question correctly and that's probably why you did it wrong.
The conclusion is not this as you said.
The conclusion is that not all the bird species have experienced a surge in their numbers
Instead the conclusion is
Nevertheless, these zoologists are wrong
.
The part after the above statement is mentioned as an example of how zoologists could be wrong. That's it.

Hope this helps.

F1: Zoologist warn about something [the number of bird species will becomes extinct]

(Authors Opinion)Conclusion: Zoologists are wrong
F2: Example of native NA raptors [were close to extinction but rebounded].
This is used to support conclusion

Q: Evaluate the argument : Whether Zoologists are wrong or right
B- If special efforts were taken for NA raptors , then zoologist are true
Else zoologists are wrong

Others
A- Conclusion is about whether the number of bird species will becomes extinct or not.
How many non native were introduced is not important, as the example talks about replenishment
of native raptors , they were not replenished by raptors from other countries but by the local populations itself.
C- zoologist experience IS OOS as conclusion is about extinction
D- Example was about native raptors, migrated one's are not talked about
E- acres of land is OOS as conclusion is about extinction

IMO:B

Ok, I got the point you guyzzz are making. But I still did not understand one thing, i.e, what is the first sentence of the stimulus exactly saying?

'Zoologists warn of an imminent surge in the number of bird species that will become extinct within this century.'

Does this sentence mean that there was or would be an increase in the number of bird species that will become extinct.
OR

Does this sentence mean that there was or would be a decrease in the number of the bird species that will become extinct.

If the 2nd one is the meaning, then the answer as D is understood.

But if the 1st one is the meaning, then the answer as D cannot be understood.

Kindly help me understand the meaning of the word 'surge' , i saw it on google and it is written as a sharp increase.

Kindly help please...

Thank you.

Conclusion is that the number of species that will becomes extinct in this century is increasing.
Zoologist is warning about this increase in extinct.

which is your first interpretation
'Does this sentence mean that there was or would be an increase in the number of bird species that will become extinct.'

B -is correct
If special efforts are required to replenish the species then the zoologist warning will come true that is there will increase in extinct
if no efforts are required, then warning will not hold as they would be replenished like NA raptor species. Because NA raptor was close to extinction but didnot become extinct.
So getting close to extinct is not a problem because they have got replenished (in case of native raptor)

This is what the sentence means.

oologists warn of an imminent surge in the number of bird species that will become extinct within this century.

A] How many species of non-native raptors have been introduced into North America since 1970?
>> we are talking of only native species. hence -ve

B] What special efforts, if any, have been made to rescue native North American raptors since 1970?
--hold this one
C] How many years' experience do the zoologists have in evaluating patterns of extinction among animals?
- irrelevant as we not talking about the zoologists here

D] To what degree have native North American raptors migrated to other parts of the world?
-- they could have migrated but we are talking of only native species that are available in this part. even if after migration - the available number is more. hence no point in considering the migration.

E] How many acres of woodland are set aside each year as bird refuges?
- irrelevant

Seems B is the answer-- what is OA ?
