help in sentence correction

can some one help me with the following questions- the answers ans their explainations..

Q.The nurses went on strike to protest their being overworked.
a. their being overworked.
b. themselves being overworked
c. themselves as overworked
d. their overworking
e. overworking themselves

Q.According to Herbert Essame, Patton might have accomplished more had he not been held In check his superiors, Alexander in the Mediterranean an isen ower n Europe.
(A) had he not been held in check by his superiors
(B) had his superiors not held him in check
(C) if his superiors had not held him in check
(D) if he was not held in check by his superiors
(E) when not held in check by his superiors

Ans is E. However, i feel it should be A. Can some one please explain.

(A) as it has been
(B) as it has done
(C) which it has
(D) which it has been
(E) which it had been

The nurses = Subject
went on strike = Verb
to protest = Verb infinitive
their being overworked = Object

B & C are ruled out because so we cannot have " check " before Alexander, we have to have superiors before Alexander
A(past continuous) says Patton was continuously held in check
D says Patton was held in check only for sometime
