Even though the costs of paying baseball players amounts to a sum greater than one half of the overall cost of operating a Major League Baseball team last year, Major League Baseball franchise owners were still willing to pay increasingly higher salaries to top players.

A.amounts to a sum greater
B.amounts to more
C.amounted to more
D.amounted to a greater sum
E.amounted to greater

I'm bit torn apart between C and E.
costs ->countable so, 'costs' should go with greater so I'm tempted with E but [spoiler]OA:C[/spoiler]

Options A and B are wrong because the verb amount is in present?

Why option D is not correct? I would appreciate any help here.

This question relies on a pretty specific rule: when referring to a fraction or a percentage, we typically use "more than" rather than "greater than". When we refer to a number than is not a fraction or a percentage, we typically use "greater than". Here, we have "more/greater than one half of the overall cost". "One half" is a fraction, so we use "more than".
