critical reasoning.......

by chachi » Fri Mar 13, 2009 10:51 am
Excavations on the now uninhabitated isle of kilton reveal a scene typical of towns decimated by volcanic ash.archeologit have hypothesized that the destruction was due to volcanic activity known to have occured in vicinity of the island in 160bC.

A--NO coins minted after 160bc were found in kilton ,but coine minted before 160bc were foundi n abundance.

B--pieces of gold and pearl jwellerey that are often found in graves dating from years preceding and following 160 bc were also found in several graves on island.

C--most modern histories of the region mention that several major volcanic eruption occured near the island in 160bc.

D--several small jugs carved in styles popilar in the region in the century between 200bc and 10 bc were found in kilton.

E-- drawings of the styles that was definitely used in the region after 160 c weere found in kilton.

my pick is C.........i ll get back to u with OA ..plzz write in ur ans[/spoiler]

IMO "A"..

"A" shows no evidence of any activity after 160BC and definetely adds strength to author's reasoning.

I agree its C.

We are looking for something that would support the fact that the town was destroyed by volcanic activity that occurred in the vicinity.
Only C offers support to this hypothesis.

IMO "C" is wrong because it just says that eruption occured.

Eruption is not same as destruction. For "C" to be true we need extra assumption that destrution occured due to that very eruption which may or may not be the case. Destruction might have occured due to some later eruptions too.

A - this is common pattern in gmat
If no coins found made after and many found made before therefore the use of coins was, and then abruptly extinguished, thus something happened, and this something is catastrophe.

C - the coomon rule(from Kaplan) never rely on somebody opinion or claim when arguing.
we are the champions !
