There are X more apples than bananas implies Apples - Bananas = X
There are X times more apples than bananas implies Apples = X*Bananas

Put it in words first:

Bananas + X more = Apples

Or think of it conceptually. We have MORE apples than bananas, so Bananas + More Bananas = Apples.
