Since the GMAT would provide answer choices, an alternate approach is to plug in values.
If we plug x=1/2 and y=2 into √(x²y³ + 3x²y³), we get:
√( (1/2)²2³ + 3(1/2)²2³ )
= √ ( (1/4)(8) + 3(1/4)8 )
= √ (2 + 6)
= √8
= 2√2.
Now we plug x=1/2 and y=2 into the answers to see which yields our target of 2√2.
Answer choice: 2xy√y
2xy√y = 2(1/2)(2)√2 = 2√2.
