The young man was surprised to find that his experience as a tutor had been used as the basis for the protagonist in a short story written by a former girlfriend.

A. that his experience as a tutor had been used as the basis for the protagonist in
B. his experience as a tutor having been used as the protagonist in
C. his experience as a tutor had been used as the basis for the protagonist's in
D. his experience as a tutor being used as the basis for the protagonist of
E. that his experience as a tutor had been used as the basis for events in the life of the protagonist in


OA later.

IMO E

Had been is correct usage. Protagonist life events are more PAST to the guy's surprise.

Experience cannot be base of the Protagonist but the protagonist's life.
If the problem is Easy Respect it, if the problem is tough Attack it

Exactly -- comparisons need to compare similar things. An alternative correct answer, had it been an answer choice, could have been "that, because of his experience as a tutor, he had been used as the basis for the protagonist in"

OA is E indeed
but i chose E only because all other options were poorer than that.
and i was bit confused with the additional of extra details...
'basis for events in the life of the protagonist'
so may be we can call it best available option
