Work Problem

by mlaboda » Sat Sep 05, 2009 3:04 pm
If Mike and George working at their respective rates can each whitewash 600 square feet of fence in x and y hours, respectively, how long will it take both of them working together at their own rates to whitewash 600 square feet of fence?

1. x - y = 1
2. (xy) / (x+y) = 6/5

Rate that Mike works at 1/x
Rate that George works at 1/y

1/x + 1/y = 1/T where T is the time to get the work done.

Since we need T

Using the equation above...

T = xy/(x+y)

Statement 1 is not useful to get T

Statement 2 gives us exactly what we need ... T = 6/5 .. so B

I wish you hadn't shown the answer though :( I was looking forward to solving the rate problem
