rakes

by Viper83 » Sun Jun 19, 2011 2:58 am
A certain business produced x rakes each month from november to february and shipped x/2 at the rakes beginning of each month from march through october. The business paid no storage costs for the rakes from november through february, but it paid storage costs of 0.10 dollars / rake for each month march thru october for the rakes that had not been shipped. In terms of x, what was the total storage cost, in dollars, that the business paid for the rakes for the 12 months november thru october.

a. 0.40x
b. 1.20x
c. 1.40x
d. 1.60x
e. 3.20x

Hi,
Number of rakes at the end of february = 4x
From march the number of rakes decrease by x/2.
So, storage cost in March = (0.1)(3.5x)
storage cost in April = (0.1)(3x)
.
.
.

Total storage costs = (0.1)(3.5x+3x+..0.5x) = (0.1)(14x) = 1.4x

Hence, C
Cheers!

march = 4x-(x/2)= 7x/2 = 3.5x*0.1=.35x
april = 7x/2-x/2= 3x*0.1 = 0.3x
......
oct = 0.5x

adding all we have = .35+.3+.25+.2+.15+.1+.05 = 1.4x
