profile evaluation

by dashingdash » Sat Feb 26, 2011 9:07 pm
HI,

I have done some research related to schools which I feel is the right ones for my MBA.Colleges I want to apply-

Interested in analytics and strategy consulting (already working for last 6 months in a analytics consulting firm)
Stretch-Harvard, Chicago Booth
Chance- MIT Sloan, Duke Fuqua, Haas Berkeley, IMD

I am already working in a good company and being treated at par with MBA from most colleges. So, I feel that my growth and learning experience can come from the above colleges. I am not able to select Kellogs as it provides only cosigner loans

My education-
1. Bachelors in metallurgy from IIT Kanpur (7/10) rough department rank- 16/42
2. Class 12- 84% and Class 10- 88%
3. NTSE scholar, 2 times cleared RMO (Regional Maths Olympiad) and represented my state in INMO. won several other national and state level scholarships
4. Given GMAT twice- 680/5.5 (april 2009) and 710/5 (april 2010)

My work experience
1. Around 56 months of work experience- 1 year as an analyst in a KPO, 3.3 years as an analytics manager for a life insurance company, got promoted to senior manager got to handle a small team of 2 people and in last 6 months, working a Project manager in a analytics consulting firm. Handling a team of 5 people and working for 3-4 projects for a fortune 100 company.

Extracurriculars and Community service
4. Won several prizes in quizzing and robotics during college. Also organised several events in the college fests
5. About community service, has taken active participation in organising blood donation camps along with a spiritual organisation. Also took part as a student guide in helping junior students to adapt the competitive and demanding environment.

Please help me by giving an opinion whether I am on a right track or I need to check some more schools or work on my profile.

Thanks a lot in anticipation
Dash

In short, you seem to be on track for applying to your target schools. Where you have an advantage I feel is in leadership. Not all applicants have actually functioned in a management role as you have, leading teams and having direct reports. Make sure you bring this out in your application, which should help you stand out. Having been a leader, you can in theory bring a new element to the table when cracking cases and discussing topics in class. Your academics seem competitive, and your GMAT is great. The fact that you have bonafide community participation is a plus, since it will demonstrate a history of giving back--always a desirable quality to the adcoms. If you can relate your story in a thoughtful, compelling way, you should have a good shot at one or more of your target schools.
