Need Help and Profile Evaluation!!

by Iamconfused » Thu Mar 17, 2011 12:16 am
Hello Everyone,

I'm new to this forum and glad to have come across this forum.

I'm really confused right now and seek your advice.
I'm an IT Professional (Testing Engineer, to be precise) with a work experince of 1.5 years, since Sep 2009.
I dropped one year after high school to prepare for Engineering entrance exams.
Then following year, Got admitted to one of the Top 10 Engineering institutions at that time.
Didnt do exceptionally well in graduation, certain family problems being the reason. i was fairly involved in Extra curriculars and average in acads (GPA - around 3.5). I was captain of school cricket team, continued playing cricket in college and had been a part of my college cricket team. Did small contributions in college fests during sophomre year and following year. During final year, Handled a major position (Head) in college fest against my lack of experience for such position. Reason being that i was among the firsts to initiate fest activities and convincing people to join the team which lacked motivation fearing lack of sponsorship due to recession.

After graduation although i continued playing cricket (a Team sport). Then later shifted to learning Tennis and Tabel tennis. However, i have not been able to do much out of it, in terms of awards, wining tournaments etc. As a result, i cant show them how good i'm or how far i have progressed in short span. Recently Joined a community club which helps improving public speech skills.

I'm planning to give my GMAT this year and get admit next year. I'm targeting a score of 750+. I would really appreciate if you could help me by suggesting some extra curricular activities that i can pursue to make my application stronger. I WISH to go to one of the top 10 B-schools, location not a barrier.

THank you so much in advance.

Hi IamConfused,

This space is reserved for consultants but i am posting as you seem to be eager for a reply .

You can post your question once again to get replies from the B-School Consultants.

You have a Typical - Indian / IT / Male profile . Moreover , your Profile is not too different from people who apply from this demographic . In this scenario , you need to be pragmatic , and look for schools which are much lower in ranking , since , if fell even with a GMAT of 750 it would not be feasible to get into Top 20 even . I say this since it is better to know early where you stand and choose the Schools very early on and prepare accordingly.

Coming to your question of Extracurricular Activities try to get into a leadership role in Community Service - join an NGO or your firm's CSR Activities - since CS is an imperative part of the Application.

Thanks!

Thanks Ashish321...Thanks a lot for your advice....I agree with you that mine is a very typical profile in comparison to people applying from subcontinent...Will surely work towards improving it as per your suggestions..
