Getting into a Master's Program

Sorry if this is not MBA related, but I am applying to Cornell's MMH (Master's of Management in Hospitality) 12 month program. I am a senior at a highly ranked public university with a 3.1 GPA. I looked on the Cornell website for applicant information. The average GMAT for accepted students is 640, the average GPA being 3.3, but there isn't anything mentioned beyond this. If I can achieve this GMAT score or a little higher score, combined with my current GPA, and almost a year of relative work experience from internships, do you think I will be a competitive applicant?

I'll admit upfront that I don't know anything specifically about your program at Cornell. I can, however, offer a few pieces of advice based on my knowledge of masters programs in general.

I have generally found that test scores and academics always matter as a point of parity. You have to have the requisite scores to get through the first screen. Poor scores will almost always get you red flagged early in the process and solid scores advance you to the next round, but don't actually get you in.

Getting in is all about creating a best match. The school wants to know if you'll enjoy the program, be successful in it, and be able to give back to the community. The best way to demonstrate that you're a good match is to tell a clear story that weaves together your career aspirations with the program's curriculum. Focus on showing that without a Cornell masters degree, you can't achieve your dream.

Finally, shoot for a GMAT that will offset your lower than average GPA. If you are .2 GPA points behind the average, shoot for a minimum 20 GMAT points above the average.
