Networking

Beyond mere nepotism, getting into an MBA program can be a matter of how you interact with who it is you know. So, before applying for graduate school, sit down and think about who you know, and how they can help you get into the program of your choice. Having a previous, positive collaboration with the faculty or students in a program can be helpful during an interview for that particular school. While you dont necessarily want to drop names, explaining how you have successfully worked with folks in the organization illustrates how you may already fit within the core group.

Networking may be the skill most crucial to business success. A product or service is only as brilliant as its creators ability to find folks interested in financing and marketing that idea. Even long before completing your MBA submissions, stop to consider who you know that can help you get work experience or even nominate you to volunteer on a board, thereby bolstering the appeal of your applications.

When networking on social media, be cautious of your online profile. Your LinkedIn account may be wholly professional as per its purpose to assist you in making connections within the business world. Keep in mind, however, that once people are introduced to one social media account, its no great leap for them to find your personal accounts on platforms such as Twitter, Facebook or Instagram. Keep your social media presence polite, positive and your trolling to a minimum. Companies and schools are increasingly aware of swift consumer backlash in the face of online scandals, and are quick to avoid candidates they feel will contribute to a hostile work environment.

Most schools emphasize the importance of networking within the business world, by supporting various networking associations. Some groups are generalized, while others support the interests of women, and others who have traditionally been less visible in the business world.

Once youve been accepted to an MBA, youll want to network like a champ to increase your chances of getting an internship at a high-profile company in your field. You can then network your way into fabulous job prospects or entrepreneurial empires after graduation!
